Medicare in Wyoming Series Part A

What is Medicare Part A:

Medicare Part A is one of four parts of Medicare, and Part A will be the focus of this article in our Medicare in Wyoming series.

Medicare Part A was created in 1965 with Lyndon B Johnson signing it into law. It officially started on July 1, 1966 and was known as original Medicare. Original Medicare includes Part A alongside Part B.

Medicare Part A is known as a fee-for-service plan, which means that healthcare providers are paid directly for each service they provide.

How Much Does Medicare Part A Cost:

The good news is that most people will have no premium for Medicare Part A in Wyoming. This is because they or their spouse has paid the Medicare tax for at least ten years. You need at least 40 working credits or quarters, and you can receive up to 4 credits each year. Hence the ten years. Around 99% of Medicare Beneficiaries do not pay for Part A according to CMS.

If you don't have 40 working credits, then you will pay the full premium for Part A. The full premium for 2025 is $518. If you have at least 30 quarters then you will pay a reduced premium of $285 a month for 2025.

How do I know if I Have Part A:

The easiest way to know if you have Part A and when it starts is to just look at your Medicare Card. On the bottom of your card it will say Hospital (Part A) and then to the left of that it will have your start date.

If you don't have your Medicare card yet you can also log onto your Social Security account online and lookup your "Benefit Verification Letter" which will show your start dates for Part A and B. Also, you can call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) and speak to a representative to tell you your start dates.

What Does Part A Cover:

Part A covers many major events. You most likely will use Part B more than Part A, but it is necessary to understand what Part A covers. The main service it covers is Inpatient hospital stays. That is why on your Medicare card it will call Part A Hospital insurance. An inpatient hospital stay is not an emergency visit or an observation stay at the hospital those are covered by Part B. Part A also cover a slew of other services like skilled nursing facility, behavior and mental health, hospice care, and some home health care.

Medicare in Wyoming Series will Continue:

We will break down how Part A covers these services in more detail as we continue our Medicare in Wyoming series.
